What’s the first book that you’re reading for January?
I’m rereading How To Win Friends & Influence People (HTWFAIP) by Dale Carnegie. I first read it about eleven years ago, so a revisit is past due. Do you reread books, and if you do, why?
Dale Carnegie wrote HTWFAIP in 1936. This classic reminds us of people’s highest interests, their own. Have you ever noticed the reason for an argument or a war? “I am right,” “This is mine,” “I don’t care what you’ve got to say,” “This is what I want,” “What about me?"…and the list goes on.
It is hard to live in peace if we only focus on what we want. Here is an overlooked principle. We can often get what we want by listening to others and giving them what they want.
There are more lessons in HTWFAIP that we can make note of and practice. If we want to become better spouses, coworkers, Christians, etc we must be intentional. The change begins by identifying your faults and taking action to improve.
Quotes From How To Win Friends And Influence People.
“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”
“Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn—and most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.”
“Everybody in the world is seeking happiness—and there is one sure way to find it. That is by controlling your thoughts. Happiness doesn't depend on outward conditions. It depends on inner conditions.”
My reading goal for 2023 is one book per month. What book are you reading now?
